CNN.com - Lawmaker to builders: Consider feng shui - Jan. 31, 2004: "SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- More hippy, dippy jokes about California might be on the way, thanks to a state lawmaker who wants building codes to consider feng shui.
State Assemblyman Leland Yee, a Democrat representing San Francisco, has introduced a resolution that urges public building officials to accommodate feng shui -- the ancient Chinese art of designing structures and arranging objects to create harmonious energy flow.
Yee said Friday he underestimated the controversy the legislation would bring when he introduced it earlier this month.
'We've been the recipients of some joking in the capitol,' Yee said at a news conference, flanked by feng shui experts Steven Post and Eagle Wong.
The resolution isn't meant to become law or force cities to change how buildings are constructed. Instead, Yee said, it would simply encourage building officials to accommodate the concept and be more sensitive to a cultural practice that can improve environments where people live and work. "

CNN.com - Carter slams Georgia's 'evolution' proposal - Jan. 30, 2004: "Carter said dropping the word would leave Georgia's high school graduates 'with a serious handicap as they enter college or private life where freedom of speech will be permitted.'
Carter also predicted ridicule for the state, along with discredit on Georgia's university system.
'The existing and long-standing use of the word 'evolution' in our state's textbooks has not adversely affected Georgians' belief in the omnipotence of God as creator of the universe,' Carter said. 'There can be no incompatibility between Christian faith and proven facts concerning geology, biology, and astronomy.
'There is no need to teach that stars can fall out of the sky and land on a flat Earth in order to defend our religious faith.' "

-- Right on Mr. Carter. They wonder where sterotypes about southerners come from.

Ok, I was at the Naperville Republican Women's even a couple of nights ago. All of the major players besides Oberweis were there.

Some (general) thoughts.
Ryan -- Did a good job, he comes accross a very much in control. Had a lot of his people there. Seemed to be the best organized of the bunch.

Kathuria -- Oh where do I start. He kept using We and Our. We belive this, our campaign is doing this. Dude the pro-noun is I. Secondly he gave an answer on trade that may no sense. He said something to the effect of if we open our markets it is good because it worked for India. Dude, India has all sorts of trade restrictions and it's biggest appeal (people make less) is not going to resonate with voters. His point about how he will bring people into the election because of his race is a bit insulting. I would like to think people vote for you because of the quality of your ideas, not because you may be Swedish. Also his idea of expand O'Hare without taking out any houses or businesses was histerical. I think he needs to get some help if we nominate him we are screwed.

Borling -- Sounds alot like John Durry. Very impresive resume. However he comes off a bit like your uncle who provides you with too much advice. Also a little to doom and gloom.

Jonathan Wright -- Wow, I was impressed with him. Well spoken, intellegent. I know we will hear from him in the future.

McKenna -- Sorry I have never really liked him, I guess I don't even have a good reason why besides the whole 'I am a success even tho I worked for my dad' strikes me as hollow. I don't seem to get a sense of why he is running.

Steve R. -- I am not going to even try and spell the last name. Also came accross very well, however I don't think the primary is about change in the party. He seems to dwell on this a bit too much.

In general worth the time to go to the event. I recommend you catch one if you get the chance. More thoughts to come.

Daily Herald: "Hynes defends campaign funds
By Eric Krol Daily Herald Political Writer
Posted January 29, 2004
Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Dan Hynes found himself on the defensive Thursday over questions about his campaign finances at the first major candidates' forum of the primary season.
Speaking before 325 movers and shakers at a City Club of Chicago luncheon, Hynes denied there was any coordinated effort to trade contributions from his less-regulated state campaign fund for donations to his U.S. Senate campaign fund, which operates under stricter federal laws."

-- Glad to see at least someone is asking him about it.

Illinois Politics-- Chris Lauzen, Republican State Senator serving Kane & Kendall Counties: "Steve Rauschenberger for U.S. Senate 1-22-04

Wednesday, January 28, 2004

By Senator Chris Lauzen

Twelve long years ago Senator Steve Rauschenberger and I met for the first time. We had both been invited to the Aurora Civic Center for a candidate's forum sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. We were both new to politics and were working hard to win the Republican nomination to represent different sections of Aurora in the Illinois State Senate.

I had heard that Steve was intelligent, very hard working, and a 'true believer' in the traditional Republican cause. By the end of the meeting, I was impressed by his frank honesty, energy, and sense of humor. Even on questions that I knew were difficult, Steve stepped up to speak the truth as he understood it without pandering for political advantage. "

-- Strong words from Senator Lauzen ( I recommend you read the whole thing). I have a lot of respect for Chris (even when I disagree with him) and this is a powerful statement he make for Steve.
We'll see who shows up and says what at the Naperville Republican Women's event tonight

The fourth grader from Arizona reflected on her dream when she wrote the winning essay in a nationwide contest to name the two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity.

In the contest sponsored by NASA, The Planetary Society, and LEGO, her 50-word essay was chosen from over 10,000 entries.

On The Early Show, Sofi read her essay, I used to live in an orphanage. It was dark and cold and lonely. At night i would look up and see the sky and I felt better. Thank you for the spirit and opportunity.

Asked how she came up with the names Spirit and Opportunity, she tells co-anchor Hannah Storm, "Well, you couldn't really do anything at the orphanage. And when you come to America, you can do whatever you want to do and be whatever you want to, and that was spirit and opportunity. "

Saw a post on Illinoisleader.com about if Jack Ryan has given any money to canidates, turns out he has given quite a bit. I figured it might be fun to search at the state level.

Note: I may be tracking these a bit wrong. Also it is posible they may have messed up names. Also these totals may include their committee's buying tickets (tables) to Lincoln Day dinners, etc.

Still more Sneed: "GOP senatorial candidate Jim Oberweis, the dairy czar who is capitalizing on his ice cream products, told a Republican forum Monday, he'd have no trouble bringing women into his campaign because . . . 'They like ice cream more than men.'
Somebody ought to give this guy a lickin'."

Brains can hurt job applicants: "Recently, I interviewed with a school in one of the metro Atlanta counties, only to receive an e-mail from the principal stating, 'Though your qualifications are quite impressive, I regret to inform you that we have selected another candidate. It was felt that your demeanor and therefore presence in the classroom would serve as an unrealistic expectation as to what high school students could strive to achieve or become. However, it is highly recommended that you seek employment at the collegiate level; there your intellectual comportment would be greatly appreciated. Good luck.'
After reading the e-mail several times over, I felt as if I had been slapped in the face. It is truly a sad day in the world of education when a 22-year-old aspiring educator is informed that he is too intellectual to teach high school."

'They let women debate national policy,' Skinner replied, 'and we don't even have to wear skirts.'
'It's not the skirts that are inappropriate, just your rants,' Borling continued, prompting Skinner to launch into a listing of her career achievements. 'I'm not just a radio talk-show host,' she said."

A Hynes official last week said the donations and re-donations are a routine part of politics, and weren't an attempt to slip restricted state campaign money into Hynes' Senate campaign. "

Coming in first during this race was not a surprise, Pappas said. When I enter a race, including this election to become the next U.S. Senator from Illinois, I'm in it to win it and that's the message I'm taking throughout this state: I get it, and I get it done.
The event held at Union Station Multiplex required participants to swim, bike, and run, testing athletic endurance and stamina. Pappas, 54, was awarded a gold medal for her efforts, covering the most total distance of any participant in her age bracket. "

I have started seeing ads yesterday. There was the McKenna 'I am the jobs senator' ad. As well as the Blair Hull bio spot ( they were both on right after each other right before SNL). Not to sound like my brother, he is a Democrat. But, how many unemployed people and or people who work in the industrial sector vote in Republican primaries. Ok, last post for tonight (almost time for Letterman). What is the IL primary become relevant for the democratic presidental nomination. That would really boost turnout as well as make playing to 'the activists' only in the party less effetive. It could provide a boost to Hull and Obama. If nothing else it may make the last 3 weeks of the primary season very interesting here in IL.

I don't know what impact if any this will have on the GOP side, besides it may hurt the 'moderate' canidate (whomever is that is). Then again the odds of this being relevant are slim.

Chicago Tribune | Poll Numbers

In the GOP race, Oberweis received the support of 16 percent of primary voters surveyed, and Ryan was backed by 12 percent. That represents an 8 percentage point drop from Ryan's results in the October poll, which was conducted while he was running TV ads in the Chicago area.

Businessman Andrew McKenna Jr. and state Sen. Steven Rauschenberger of Elgin both were supported by 5 percent of the survey's respondents, with 57 percent remaining undecided.

Also running are Joyce Washington and Nancy Skinner in the Democratic primary and John Borling in the GOP race.

-- There is also basically a tie at with the GOP as well if you take the margin into accoutn.

Factoring in the poll's margin of error, Hull remains in a statistical tie with the leaders. But that may be little comfort to Hull, who has been unable to grab the lead despite outspending his opponents by millions of dollars, most of it on advertising and consultants."

-- I guess this seems like a good idea he used to bring ice cream to Republican events before when he ran the first time, he . I have not seen him at one lately so I don't know if he is still doing it or not. Perhaps I'll take the kids tomorrow and see whats, what. Fact finding you know.

Michael Kraik had launched the lawsuit against the Springbank Minor Hockey Association and its current and former presidents, claiming his son was humiliated after being placed on a team beneath his abilities"

-- The Chicago Blackhawks look forward to having him on the ice vs Colorado on the 11th.
I think we have an answer to the 'What is Blair Hull's first name' question ...

It appears to be Marson or is that Maison?

Either way I still think it is better than Blair.

That's my deep thoughts for now

"Democrat Richard Gephardt's manager accused Howard Dean's presidential campaign on Thursday of planning to slip non-Iowans into the Jan. 19 caucuses to pose as state residents and support Dean.:

Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi denied the allegation and told Gephardt manager Steve Murphy 'sleazy tactics like yours are exactly the reason that people have stopped participating in the political process.

In a letter to Trippi and later in a conference call with reporters, Murphy said a Dean field organizer in Iowa told a Gephardt staff member some of the expected 3,500 out-of-state Dean supporters coming to Iowa to help turn out the caucus vote would try to participate.

--- Let me get this right, the Dean people think some of their people might try and sneek into a caucus. Not that they asked them to, told them to or anything like that.

I suspect they point the guy is making is that some of these people might try to do so when they are in the state. It would be tempting for someone who has spent all week in Iowa working to give it a try. I don't think there is a story here.

Paging Dr. Heimlich for Rep. Gephardt.

My Way News: "WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush will announce plans next week to send Americans to Mars and establish a permanent human presence on the moon, senior administration officials said Thursday night."
Bush won't propose sending Americans to Mars anytime soon; rather, he envisions preparing for the mission more than a decade from now, one official said.

In addition to proposing the first trip to the moon since December 1972, the president wants to build a permanent space station there.

-- This would be beyond cool. I don't know how the senate canidates feel about this. Perhaps we could even fly 'Eagles' up there like in Space 1999.
Candidate applies for Bears coach: "Borling spokesman David Zapata was even more cutting, arguing Rauschenberger is certainly not the Mike Ditka in the race.
'Steve Rauschenberger running for the U.S. Senate is like the Bears bringing back Dave Wannstedt,' Zapata said. 'It's a step backwards. ... We need tested, experienced leadership like John Borling -- someone who can help rebuild the party, not someone who's picked up the uniforms for the last decade.'"

-- Someone should give David Zapata a raise.
Chicago Tribune | Hynes wins Illinois AFL-CIO endorsement: "In a show of labor support, state Comptroller Dan Hynes won the Illinois AFL-CIO endorsement Thursday for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate."

Tamarin and other delegates said the key issue put before the meeting was whether to endorse Hynes and that no other contender was offered to the delegates.

While the delegates were taking their vote, a huge blowup of a union card issued in 1962 to another candidate in the race, millionaire commodities trader Blair Hull, sat outside the hall. The card was issued by the Cannery Warehousemen, Food Processors, Drivers, and Helpers, Local 679 in Los Gatos, Calif.

-- So it goes to Danny after all. Interesting they didn't offer a list of canidates for the delegates to pick from.

I am looking forward to seeing poling numbers in a few weeks and see if Blair Hull is behind if he is going to pull out the checkbook and go negative.

Help Gery while you write your holiday cards:
One of the best things you can do to help Gery win is tell your friends and family why you support Gery and ask them to support him too. We've developed a great program that makes this as easy and time efficient for you as possible.
As you put together your holiday card list, keep Gery in mind! Send us the list of your friends and family members who live in Illinois and are eligible to vote. Don't forget to include PTA groups, work directories, church groups and community organizations! Send us the list and we'll print letters (that you can personalize!) and drop them in the mail shortly before the election. Call Mandy at 312-681-5310 for more information on how you can participate.

-- This is from Grey's web site. Lets see if I am reading this correctly. You want me to basically send you every single address I have with everyone from the folks I go to church with to the other parents at Pre-School and you will write up letters to them. Oh, I am sure you are just going to discard the addresses afterwards as well.

I am sitting here in OneMan central thinking. Is this really clever or really stupid...... I think I am going to go with stupid.

"You're Invited...Tuesday, December 30 from 6pm to 7:30pm
The Improv Olympic, 3541 N. ClarK, for drinks and snacks.
A $25 minimum contribution is requested.

-- Just got this of Nacy Skinner's web site (right at the top). Also the K at the end of Clark is from the site, not a OneMan misspelling or mistype this time. If she gets 10% of the vote I am going to be shocked.

Nothing like having a promo for a funder that was almost a week ago. At least there is less pink on the site now.

Senator Rauschenberger will appear nationally on ESPN 2 TV tomorrow morning at 6:10 am and 8:10 am. ESPN 2 is beamed into 85 million homes. He will be talking about his picks for the Super Bowl, the US Senate race and other related topics.

-- This was in an e-mail I got from the Rauschenberger campaign today (I actually got 2 of them they may want to check their e-mail list for dupes). It seems like he is going to be on Cold Pizza on the duce. I guess this came about from the whole Bears thing? I might actualy have my ReplayTV (like a TiVO) capture it since at 6:10 either the kids are in our room watching PBS kids or we are asleep.

John Kerry's Road to Iowa Merges Into Memory Lane : "Suddenly Kerry seems transported to earlier, more rebellious days. On Saturday night, when Yarrow performed 'Puff the Magic Dragon' at a house party in Ames, Kerry lifted his fingers to his mouth for a quick toke on an imaginary joint. You can almost see his thick mane of silver hair returning to the shaggy brown do of those days."

Illinois Conservative Politics: "CHICAGO -- Republican U.S. Senate candidate Steve Rauschenberger called a press conference in bitterly cold downtown Chicago on Tuesday to announce that in addition to running for U.S. Senate, he had applied to be head coach of the Chicago Bears.
A press advisory distributed on Monday afternoon enticed reporters and cameramen with a headline hint, 'Halas. Ditka. Rauschenberger?' and concluded with 'Great photo opportunities.' "

-- If this is what you have to do to get attention then you are toast. It is also interesting that he appears to be the only GOP canidate buying google ad-words.
Do a google search (handy links provided) on Rauschenberger , Andy McKenna Borling and on the Democratic side
Obama

and you will see an add for the Steve web site.

However you don't see an Steve ad if you search on Kathuria, Jack Ryan or Andy Martin.

Something from Andy McKenna : "GLENVIEW, IL - Republican U.S. Senate candidate Andy McKenna today called on the Department of Homeland Security to issue a permanent requirement that all foreign airlines institute air marshal programs onboard flights in the United States to safeguard American travelers and American soil. McKenna also wants foreign carriers to install 'Fortress Doors' in cockpits to protect flight crews from terrorist attacks, as U.S. carriers now are required to do."

-- Interesting however shouldn't be US air marshalls on the flights. If you let Air Bubba out of County X to use it's own air marshalls how would we know they were not part of a plot?

Hey Air Bubba the flag airline of Bubbaland could you put a couple of armed men on your flight to cleavland for me. Also putting marshalls on evey international flight over US airspace would be expensive and require a huge number of qualified marshalls. You just don't want some dude with a gun but a highly qualified person in that role.

As for the 'Fortress Door' issue I suspect that is already taking place.

'They're actually pretty dressy,' said his wife, Abby.

The club Crush, in the Des Moines suburb of Clive, prohibits tennis shoes and hooded sweat shirts, but 'we make exceptions for people all the time,' said owner Tom Baldwin."

-- I think if I lived in Iowa it would be very cold day in the middle of the sun before I ever went to that place. I think if I lived near by it might be fun to walk in front of the place with a sign.

Besides for the ADA issues involved with this it is just friggin stupid. Reguardless if he lost his legs in Iraq or Tama, IA.

Borling resume shines, but battle plan needs work: "Borling identifies his pro-abortion-rights position as an important plus, believing his competitors will split the pro-life vote. He estimates that 25 percent of the Republican electorate favors abortion rights, which he will trumpet in the campaign. Then, there are the veterans. More than a million veterans in Illinois will come to his aid, he reasons -- and with their extended families and contacts will produce an army of 4 million. To which Borling adds senior citizens -- at age 63, he is a vigorous member. He estimates that at least 25 percent of the state's voters are seniors."

-- I am not a big fan of Jack Roeser but it is interesting that he uses the phrase 'pro-abortion-rights'. I always thought conservatives used different language for that. I guess Jack is getting mellow in his age.

Also I thing Borling has a great resume but 'Pro-Choice' republicans are not really single issue people, if they were they wouldn't be Republicans. I don't see that view being a big plus for him but a major minus with some. I would also disagree with the idea that the grassroots of the party during primary time are driven by any single issue group (guns, abortion, etc) but rather party activists in general. Also the fact his is 63 years old is nice but again I don't really vote on age and I don't think seniors do either.

Robertson told viewers he spent several days in prayer at the end of 2003."

Illinois Conservatives Say Rift in State GOP Hurts Bush: "But grassroots organizers like Doug Ibendahl, state coordinator and co-founder of Republican Young Professionals, told CNSNews.com that they are concerned the Illinois Republican Party and the Bush campaign's liaison to Illinois are making it difficult to energize the conservative base.
'Bush could win Illinois,' Ibendahl said. 'The only way he could lose is if the old corrupt guard here brings him down, and if the Bush brand gets dragged down by these horrible problems we have in Illinois.'"

-- Errr where do I start with this.
Lets not forget Bush lost IL last time around so therefore assuming a Bush defeat in IL this time is due to infighting would be silly. Unless the jobs situation turns around here it is going to be tough for Bush.
If the 'conservative base' can't get energized for Bush because of who his 'people' are then the 'conservative base' needs to get over it's self. This is like when people gripe about delegate picks. as Dennis Miller said..

"The biggest conspiracy has always been the fact that there is no conspiracy. Nobody's out to get you. Nobody gives a s.. whether you live or die. There, you feel better now?"

The Bush campaign has bigger and more important things to worry about then the fact you don't like his local coordinator choices.
