Oh joy....
Illinois Democrats have reaped the financial benefits of their political power, racking up a huge campaign fund-raising advantage that will make it even harder for Republicans to mount an election comeback.

Nothing like a happy story to end the weekend with.

Was out of town again this weekend. So not much posting. Hope to get back into the swing of things during the week.

Edgar is going to run with Judy as his running mate.
Judy is not going to run for Gov.

Please tell me the Chicago Olympics thing is some sort of joke. We couldn't pull of a Worlds Fair back in 1992, do we really think there is the politcal will to do an olympics?

For some more on the whole World's Fair 1992 fiasco go here. You really think less than 20 years later anyone is going to trust us to put on a event that will require major infrastructure.

I can already see the moto now.

The Games of the XXV Olympiad, brought to you by the Outfit.

Over at WonderBranding Marketing to Women there is a story about how a major hotel did a really bad job and ended up seriously overbooked. The point she makes is rather simple when you screw up customer service people tend to tell their freinds (Women more that men) about it.

She makes an interesting point.

Why was (if it was) the signing of the Video Game law canceled. It was supposed to take place in Aurora. But I can't find anything about the signing at the state web site.

Did it happen without a press release, does anything happen, the CBS news site has a story that says 'When he signs the bill'. He was supposed to sign it on the 18th or 19th. Rich says it was canceled because Blagojevich doesn't want to answer questions about the federal indictments.

Too bad for G-Nad since he could have gotten some play with the "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" stuff going on right now. So instead of "I want to protect children" it has become "I don't want to face the press"

Sweet.

From MoveOn.org: Oppose John Roberts' Supreme Court Nomination:
"Oppose John Roberts' Supreme Court Nomination
In nominating John Roberts, the president has chosen a right wing corporate lawyer and ideologue for the nation's highest court instead of a judge who would protect the rights of the American people. Working for mining companies, Roberts opposed clean air rules and worked to help coal companies strip-mine mountaintops. He worked with Ken Starr (yes, that Ken Starr), and tried to keep Congress from defending the Voting Rights Act. He wrote that Roe v. Wade should be 'overruled,' and as a lawyer argued (and won) the case that stopped some doctors from even discussing abortion. That's why we believe: "

Oh my god he worked with Ken Starr..
His highest profile legal opinion came when he was Solicitor General Ken Starr's deputy back in Bush Sr's term.
. So obviously he must be totally unqualified. Please, at least give me something more than guilt by association.

and as a lawyer argued (and won) the case that stopped some doctors from even discussing abortion., so your issue is that he did his job well?

Then this from our senior senator
"Basically I'll concede the fact that he's an honest man with good legal credentials who has a good temperament by all the accounts that I've read," said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., a member of the Judiciary Committee, who voted against Roberts' confirmation to his appeals court position.

"But you have to get down to the basics," Durbin told The Early Show. "Is he in the mainstream on American values on issues like civil rights, workers' rights, protecting the environment? I have an obligation to ask those questions because Americans look to the Supreme Court as the last stop in our government when it comes to our rights and liberties."

"Basically I'll concede the fact that he's an honest man with good legal credentials who has a good temperament by all the accounts that I've read," You'll concede that? How about just saying that instead of using a word that makes you sound like you feel bad that it is true. "I'll concede"...

Next "Is he in the mainstream on American values on issues like civil rights, workers' rights, protecting the environment?", well Senator at one time you could argue that Dred Scott represented 'mainstream American values' or that 'separate but equal' represented 'mainstream American values'. Isn't the question 'Is he going to correctly interpret the law without coming up with stuff from completely out of left field?'

Just asking...

The New Nanny Diaries Are Online - New York Times: "The New Nanny Diaries Are Online

By HELAINE OLEN
Published: July 17, 2005
OUR former nanny, a 26-year-old former teacher with excellent references, liked to touch her breasts while reading The New Yorker and often woke her lovers in the night by biting them. She took sleeping pills, joked about offbeat erotic fantasies involving Tucker Carlson and determined she'd had more female sexual partners than her boyfriend."

--snip--

Yet we had enough in common - if I took her statements at face value - to make me uneasy. In my 20's I, too, felt passionately about 19th-century English literature but had long since let it go, barely able to concentrate on The New York Times, let alone Henry James. I, too, had an abortion back then. And trouble with depression? Check. Self-righteousness and inflated self-regard? Affirmative.

What prompts someone to share this sort of detail of their own life just for a piece in the Style section of the New York Times?

For the Nanny's take on this (very different and I think a bit more in touch with reality) go here.

Zorn has a column today on G-Nad and stem-cells..Chicago Tribune news : Weblog:
"The worst answer, not surprisingly, came from Blagojevich himself.

When challenged, the governor puffed up righteously: 'Anytime you do what is morally right,' he said, according to the Associated Press, 'however you get there is immaterial.'

Not to step into a Durbin trap here, but if I were to read this 'ends-justify-the-means' rhetoric to you and did not tell you that it came from a governor in the United States of America, you would most certainly believe that it must have come from an infamous dictator or crazed fanatic."

Says a lot about Blago's opinon of the process.

Blagojevich has been "actively involved for more than a year" in intense efforts to pass stem-cell legislation, according to a letter signed by Schoenberg, Hynes and Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago). "It is ironic that the governor is now being accused of grandstanding when for months he has been doing exactly the opposite--working hard, quietly and behind the scenes."

If this is true why didn't he work for the Hynes bill? Again it just rings hollow.

Gov. Blagojevich is going to sign the video game bill in Aurora tomorrow. Obviously keeping video games out of the hands of 17 year olds is going to prevent stuff like this.

Rod, come and solve some real problems in Aurora.

Also why in the world is it now against the law to sell a 16 year old girl a video game without her parent(s) permission but legal for her to get an abortion without her parent(s) permission.

Seriously, I am not really a guy who votes based off of a candidates position on choice. However if we are saying that a 15 year old isn't mature enough to buy and deal with the images and messages of a M rated video game. Then they are not mature enough to deal with an abortion.

Reguardless of the video game thing a 14 year old is not mature enough to deal with an abortion.

There was a story recently about why Naperville is one of the best places in the country to live. I had a bunch of different thoughts on this, then again I live in Aurora that likes to pretend it's Naperville or Oswego I thought I might sound a bit hypocritical so here is a short list of things I like about Aurora vs. Naperville. More about what I like about Aurora than what's 'wrong' with Naperville.

1) Fewer people who look like me and have my background in Aurora. White guys with a minivan and a technical degree are a dime a dozen in Naperville.

2) I can go to the Super Mercado El Guero and get exposed to a different culture and get some really good meat. Same thing with the Wurst House.

3) I can walk around downtown Aurora and feel like parts of it are actually old, not just make to look old.

4) A working-class guy can actually afford to buy a house in Aurora.

5) I seem to encounter more people (perhaps due to political stuff) that have a life-long bond to Aurora, I am hard pressed to think of a single person I know who lives in Naperville who has even been there 10 years.

I know you could come up with a huge list about what might be 'better' about Naperville. Again this is just my opinion and more about some things that I think make Aurora well Aurora and why I really have grown to love this town I have called home for the last 10 years.

I guess the Sneedster really blew this one..
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), the woman who would be president, hits town Sunday to attend her 40th high school reunion in Park Ridge.

Today's correction...

"As much as she would love to go and see old friends at her reunion, her schedule simply did not allow for the trip," said Phillipe Reines, Clinton's press secretary. "Sorry about the confusion."
--snip--
An earlier missive from the Clinton camp intercepted by Sneed claimed she would be attending Sunday. Now we're told she will be making the rounds in New York all weekend.

So you didn't even bother to call her office to confirm the story before you did about half your column on it? I thought reporters were suposed to do that sort of thing, you know check things out before writing them and stuff like that.

The Tribune calls G-Nad's Stem Cell thing a $10 Million dollar photo-op. Then again it least it is less money that is normal photo-op.

Blagojevich stayed on the sidelines when Comptroller Dan Hynes pressed lawmakers unsuccessfully to approve a $1 billion research initiative that would have been funded with a new tax on plastic surgery.

Yet there was Blagojevich this week, boasting that he has ordered up $10 million in stem-cell research on his very own. He disguised the funding in such vague terms in the state budget that legislators didn't know it was there. Then he issued an executive order to trigger the funding for the research.

His actions, Blagojevich declared, were "morally right," leaving the impression that those who question government funding for such research are immoral. The end run, he said, was necessary because the General Assembly might have balked. "While we are forced to live in a democracy with several branches of government, sometimes in a democracy the process is frustratingly slow," the governor explained.

What process? The governor attempted no process. His actions here are incredibly devious, and they give legislators ample new reason not to trust anything he says or does.

I love this line
"While we are forced to live in a democracy with several branches of government, sometimes in a democracy the process is frustratingly slow," the governor explained.

So you just woke up one day (recently) and thought, Stem Cell research, that is something we need to do something about right now. It wasn't in the state of the state or the budget address. He didn't do jack about it when Danny had the $1 Billion tax bill, but then decided to do something about it.

Remember it was a Democrat budget, they didn't need a single GOP vote to get it passed. So he didn't think he could get it passed by his own party.

So lets look at some of the options of how he could have reached this point.

A) He woke up about a week ago and felt the urge to fund stem cell research and said find me some money
B) He wanted to fund this for a while and did it by hiding some money in the budget that he could re-allocate.
C) His internal polling was showing his approval slipping with Washergate and this is what Brad came up with.

Remember there is a reason they make him sign MOUs.

OneMan
Ok the Stem Cell thing, I don't have a basic problem with stem cell funding.
I do have an issue with it however if some of the money came from things like The Metabolic Screening and Treatment Fund (remember this one kids). This fund was set up for testing and treatment of some disorders and any extra money was suposed to be used to expand treatment or testing. But then in Blagojevich world it became general revenue funds.

So question one is, Do we only provide funds to popular treatments and/or ones that will get media play.

Question two, why did it take almost a year for Rod to jump on Danny's Stem Cell Bandwagon?

Overheard at The Film Bill Signing (No not really)

Gov. Blagojevich: Hey Vince Have you ever been to Springfield?

Vince Vaughn: Yeah on a Jr. High trip

Blagojevich: What was it like?

Vaughn: I seem to recall a couple of things needed a power-washing.

Blagojevich: Really, do you mind going on record about that

Vaughn: No

OneMan
Assuming this is genuine, how stupid do you need to be to put the smackdown on someone who wants to run for Governor from your party when you are a GOP National Committeeman. On a form you send to the campaign no less. There were already people screaming for his head before, does he really think this is going to help you Bob. Seriously, if Steve wins the nomination how can Bob Kjellander remain a National Committeeman (again assuming this stuff is legitimate.

Seriously, besides for calling him on the whole DUI thing when we have a President from this party and a Vice-President who both have DUI's in their backgrounds is just stupid. Calling Steve dishonest as well, that's just dumb.

This is classic GOP circular firing squad.

OneMan
We are extending the film and TV production tax credit in Illinois and increasing it if some goals are met. It also makes it easier to raise money in California if you can save the film industry some bread.

Well at least he might get to meet Vince Vaughn...

The bill-signing is expected to take place in Chicago on the set of "The Break-Up," a romantic comedy being filmed in Chicago and starring Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston.

He might want to be careful however, I hear Jennifer Aniston is an expert on when power-washing is right for something...

From Today's Beacon News perhaps one of the dumbest openline entries yet.

We went to the July 4th parade and I really enjoyed Little Elvis. Too bad he can't stay that way. I don't mean to be critical, but the Marines for presenting the flag, it was a nice float but the guys should have had helmets on.

You really wanted those guys to be wearing helmets in that heat, for a parade. You don't mean to be critical? Sorry you failed you are not only being critical you are being petty. We were a few floats ahead of Little Elvis so I didn't get to see much of him. Yes, it is sad that he has to grow up, that he can't stay little forever to provide you with some entertainment. Unlike those bad Marines who didn't wear their helmets.

A summary of what has come up lately on OpenLine and what will be coming.

Openline has some more deep thoughts

I've had caller ID from the first day it came out, and it's always worked for me. I wouldn't be without it. I've had calls from Ohio, Washington and so many other places I can't remember. I don't answer any of these calls I don't recognize. I have an answering machine, and if it's important, they will leave a message. Ninety percent of the time they don't, and if they do, I never call back.

You have got to me kidding me, you have gotten calls from Ohio. I wish I was that cool. Glad to see you answer your messages. What prompts you to share this with the newspaper, seriously I wish I could understand that process.

Admiral James Stockdale, POW, Medal of Honor Winner, Son of Illinois died today. A man of true character.

From his Medal of Honor citation
STOCKDALE, JAMES B.

Rank and organization: Rear Admiral (then Captain), U.S. Navy. Place and date: Hoa Lo prison, Hanoi, North Vietnam, 4 September 1969. Entered service at: Abingdon, Ill. Born: 23 December 1923, Abingdon, Ill..

Citation:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while senior naval officer in the Prisoner of War camps of North Vietnam. Recognized by his captors as the leader in the Prisoners' of War resistance to interrogation and in their refusal to participate in propaganda exploitation, Rear Adm. Stockdale was singled out for interrogation and attendant torture after he was detected in a covert communications attempt. Sensing the start of another purge, and aware that his earlier efforts at self-disfiguration to dissuade his captors from exploiting him for propaganda purposes had resulted in cruel and agonizing punishment, Rear Adm. Stockdale resolved to make himself a symbol of resistance regardless of personal sacrifice. He deliberately inflicted a near-mortal wound to his person in order to convince his captors of his willingness to give up his life rather than capitulate. He was subsequently discovered and revived by the North Vietnamese who, convinced of his indomitable spirit, abated in their employment of excessive harassment and torture toward all of the Prisoners of War. By his heroic action, at great peril to himself, he earned the everlasting gratitude of his fellow prisoners and of his country. Rear Adm. Stockdale's valiant leadership and extraordinary courage in a hostile environment sustain and enhance the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.
The Herald & Review in Decatur shares some love with G-Nad

So now Blagojevich wants to make nice with us downstaters and remind us of all the things he has done for us. It may not be as easy to mend fences as he may think - nor should it be.

The governor's actions are reminiscent of the father who runs out on his kids and comes back a couple of years later, showering them with gifts trying to get them to forget the past

Why do I suspect when this is over some at IDOT are going to feel like Uncle Junior from the Sopranos "I've got the feds so far up my a-- I could taste Brylcreem".

The Feds are talking to people at IDOT about some things.
From the above Sun Times story
A source who is associated with the Teamsters and would speak only on condition of anonymity said the union was providing legal assistance to members who work at IDOT and were interviewed by the FBI. Federal agents were questioning employees about the contract for PWS, the source said.
The source said one union lawyer accompanied the employees to the interview with FBI agents, but he did not know how many workers were being interviewed. He said the FBI was not accusing the employees of wrongdoing. ''It doesn't really involve our members directly," but what they know about the contract and the work the company did, the source said.

From the yeah right department this little tid-bit.
Hours before word of the FBI interviews became public, Martin was alongside Gov. Blagojevich defending the controversial pressure-washing contract with PWS Environmental Inc. while announcing a new step to keep a better handle on IDOT spending. Beginning today, with the start of the new state fiscal year, Martin personally will sign off on all IDOT contracts worth more than $25,000.
"I want to make sure what we're spending is absolutely proper," said Martin, who made a surprise appearance with Blagojevich during a Loop news conference about new child-support laws.
"It had nothing to do with" the washing deal.

Nothing to see here, move along.
