The daily Herald is reporting that it appears that Jim Oberwies is looking to run for Kane County GOP chairman and/or the 14th Congressional District position for State Central Committeeman. It also brings up Oberweis having an "ally" for chair and Jim running for Central Committeeman

As an elected Republican Committeeman in Kane County let me explain why I will not be voting for Jim Oberweis nor any "ally" for Chairman or Central Committeeman.

First and foremost: Violations of Ronald Regan's 11th commandment, if you want to do that as a candidate during a primary that is your choice. Don't expect me to consider that acceptable actions from someone who wants to be an elected leader of the party.

Party leaders at any level should not put 'conditions' on supporting a candidate that wins a Republican Primary unless they are really, really outside the mainstream or even the banks of the mainstream (see David Duke, Lyndon LaRouche). Sorry Jim, Judy does not even visit this neighborhood no less fall into it.

If he were to become county party chair I don't see Jim's focus being on winning local elections (picking up county board seats or helping Bob Mitchell beat Linda Chapa-LaVia) and that is what I expect out of my county chair.

I don't see Jim as being really available to people like me within the Kane County Republican Party to return a call or answer a question. I know my current county chair will return a call and answer a question. I certainly don't see Jim sitting down with the township organization chairs once a month to deal with issues at the county level or go over arraignments for the golf outing and the fall round-up.

If Jim wants to run for either of these offices or both that is his right, just as it is my right as an elected committeeman to do the same.

If he wants to go after Bob Kjellander, that's his right as well. I understand that after coming in second in three state-wide primaries as well as the whole 'not being picked as Jack Ryan's replacement thing' he may have a legitimate beef with some people. It is however my right and responsibility as a committeeman in Kane County however to say no to him using our organization as cover to promote his own agenda. Which as far as I can see is the only reason he is running for county chair and/or central committeeman.

We have local elections to contest and win and party infighting about the 'vision' of the party and Bob Kjellander is not the way to get that done.

Ok, here is an interesting if very unlikely thought.

Meeks gets in the race, FTN keeps pushing The "Protect Marriage" thing that motivates voters that are not real with happy with Judy's views on a host of social issue to get involved. As a result theStufflebeam campaign gets a bit of traction.

We could end up with sort of a four way race, with each side facing a challenge for their traditional base from their flank. Really unlikely but it could be really entertaining.

Well, things have been calming down a bit. Some general thoughts on the primary, I am surprised that Blago lost a few counties, not a ton but some all south of I-80. I think if the weather was better down south EE would have done better than 30%.

Even 30% should make Rod a bit nervous and I think it emboldens Meeks a bit.

Locally, I was surprised that Weis won with such a convincing margin. I would be interested to see what he was sending via direct mail, I suspect it was effective.

I had a co-worker come by and ask what I did with the election (in terms of the count) and as I was explaining the difference between an election judge and a poll watcher and mentioned that poll watchers are more common in general elections vs. primaries and with the governors race we would likely see more poll watchers in November she said "Oh, that's was the election was for it was a primary". Glad to see what ever direct mail got sent to her worked. :-)

Well, the election in Aurora went of without any major issues. One interesting thing in my view however.

The Kane County Democratic Party requested a copy of the 'tape' out of each machine (basically the totals, perhaps more I am not sure what they are getting with their copy) including the touch screens used for early voting. There were three machines used for early voting at the election comm. So here is the issue.

I voted early, it now appears looking at the results I am the only person who voted early in the Republican primary in my ward and pct. The fact I voted early is part of the voting record. So by taking the voting record and their copy of the tape the Kane County Democratic Party will basically know exactly who I voted for across the board. Does the Kane County Democratic Party care who I voted for, unlikely. Do I think voting information at this level of granularity should be in anyone's hands, no.

Ok, you may think a bit of a fluke. Well as I understand it they requested this tape from every voting machine. We have two different machines, the scanners and the touch screens.

Do I think they are trying to figure out who voted how this time no.

But lets look at this for November, lets say you are in a position to request and do request 'tape (the paper total)' out of every touch screen. Then you tell your voters to vote touch screen, I think you can ask to do this when you vote and if you ask I don't see how they can stop you from doing so. Since most people will vote optical scan the number of voters on the touch screen will be lower. So you can in theory have a fairly good idea of exactly how you sub-group voted.

update: There was an anonymous post that was signed by someone within the Aurora Democrats (someone I might add who forgot to bring snacks to the count Tuesday night). Since it was signed yet anonymous I am a bit leary of posting it. I will try and summarize his points however.

They are checking to make sure the totals match, they are not trying to figure out how any single person voted. He also pointed out we had/have the chance to request the same thing.

Again sort of like I said above I don't really think they want to figure out how individual people voted (a bit of a corner case) or even to see if there are voting patterns among people who likely used touch screen.

It's just with the information they will have they could and that makes me a bit uncomfortable. Also I strongly suspect at least part of the motivation for looking at the tapes is to try to find an error and use it as a campaign issue against the county clerk (if the roles were reversed I suspect we would do the same). We thought about asking for the tapes but after figuring out the shear volume of paper (hundreds of yards) it just wasn't worth the effort of reviewing it.

Poster, if you are who you say you are e-mail me the name of the person you had at the count Tuesday night and the name of the Republican you watched the count with last November and I will be happy to post your original post. Since I know you I don't want to put words in your mouth.

Second update: I called the Illinois State Board of Elections and the basically told me that there was nothing I could do to correct this issue that the statute allows for tape review at that level. The person I spoke with also said they were aware of the issue and it also exists in small counties that may only have one touch screen that is used just for the disabled.

Got calls sometime today from Phyllis Schlafly (for Oberweis) and Judy. Because when the average 36 year old conservative voter thinks of who they want to hear an endorsement from Phyllis Schlafly is the answer.

Just saw EE's 'Silence' ad during the West Wing. Not bad, way to freakin late, but not bad.

Sign observations.
Most governor signs in my neck of the woods, Brady (mostly yard signs, some 4x4) Oberweis is second (fewer yard signs than Brady perhaps more 4x4) the intermittent Topinka sign and no Gidwitz.

Kendall State's Attorney: More Boyd than Weis signs but more Weis signs that I would have expected 10%~20% advantage Boyd.

OneMan
The Oberweis straw thing got a mention on popular web site Fark (the link uses the stupid tag)
Oberweis argued that Brady and Gidwitz have no chance of winning the primary, and that he should therefore get 10 times as many chances to draw the winning straw.
"It just shows the kind of innovative free-market thinking Jim brings in," Joe Wiegand, Oberweis' campaign manager, said Saturday.

Well Joe if free market thinking is I set up the market at set the rules then I will take a pass on Jim Oberweis' free market thinking.

Some more on the Sheriff's race. The Beacon has a story today about the two candidates. I have gotten an automated call from Joe and a mailing (a nice 8.5 x 11 bio piece) from Joe. I have met both of the candidates and they seem like nice guys. Heck Kevin Williams looks a bit like our current sheriff and the campaign has been rather civil.

Joe is endorsed by Sheriff Ramsey which is some way among Republican faithful is a bit of a mixed blessing. There are Republicans out here who were against the new jail, something the sheriff was pushing for and hold that against the sheriff and I suspect Joe as well. Also at least some Republicans (this one included) were a bit put off by a 'loyalty lecture' the sheriff gave to at least one group of Republicans last year after some Republicans decided to support his Democratic rival in the primary. That all being said I think Ramsey's endorsement is a net positive for Joe.

Via Rich (read the comments by the way) some folks over at FTN think Bill Brady is some sort of plant or something. Because get this he isn't attacking Judy and also Judy said something nice about him so therefore he must be evil incarnate. How dare anyone call them selves a conservative and not do what FTN wants them to do. The horror.

They have this thought in the article.
Some sins are just too egregious to forget. And if Topinka wins on Tuesday our Illinois Party is officially dead – at least until Topinka loses to Blagojevich in November. So there will be a lot of time for holding the duplicitous accountable.
So if Oberwies loses it Brady's fault? So who's fault was it the previous two times Jim has lost a primary? It was obviously Dr. Kathuria doing in the second senate primary and I guess we can blame Durkin for running against Oberweis the first time for Jim's first primary loss.

To answer the question 'Is Brady a screen for Judy' well he did enter the race well before Judy did so that would be an interesting approach. I also highly doubt a screen would be loaning his own campaign 100K+ and getting 100K+ bank loans.

Sorry kids but after all of the stuff of the last two campaigns Jim loses heads up against virtually any single candidate in this race.
Since FTN thinks he is so bad I am going to link to his site heck I will put up a yard sign if I can get one.
Here's a question. Should the search for the new LOOP Rock Girl be sponsored in part by the Lottery?

Should the lottery be sponsoring what is basically a hot chick contest?

First I hope Mr. Stroger ends up being fine. But assuming he is still having health issues in a few weeks and wins the primary (which I think he will do) let me lay out a way he can help the governor.
Stroger decides he is not going to be healthy enough to run for another term so decides to drop out of the race (assuming he has won the primary). So then a replacement candidate needs to be slated, that replacement candidate ends up being Sen. Meeks which would take care of Meeks' ambition and/or plans to run for governor as a third party candidate.

I really doubt it will happen but it's a thought.

OneMan
Out Springfield (OH) has a story from the Chicago Free Press about Sen. Meeks' possible run for Governor. They point out Meeks was the only African-American Senator to vote against the gay rights bill, it also has this quote from Rick Garcia, political director of Equality Illinois.
"Anti-gay people have not been able to win a statewide race here in Illinois in at least a decade," Garcia said. "Meeks is very tied into the fundamentalist right wing. But those people he's in bed with -- they may be in bed with him now, but they will never marry him. They'll never vote for him. They're not going to go for a black man."

Tied to the fundamentalist right wing? Did I miss something here, I don't think Sen. Meeks would be considered right wing on the majority of issues. Also if the right wing had any issues with Meeks it would be on taxes and abortion not because of his race. Who does he think voted for Alan Keyes, liberal ubran African-Americans?

OneMan
The Kendal county state's attorney race on the Republican side seems to be getting more interesting. Lauzen endorsed Weis, Boyd Ingemunson however has the endorsements of both Speaker Hastert and Tom Cross.

This is only one of two races anyone has asked me about, some folks seem to have concerns about the amount of money and the size of donations that Ingemunson has gotten. Once you tell them about Boyd's dad they seem to understand a bit more.

Also Wies has a huge sign in a lot on Ogden across from Rush Copley (technically in Kane County) much bigger than the Lauzen sign that is there.

So in terms of local results on election night the Kendall race and the Kane county sheriff primary are going to be the two to watch. More on the Kane Sheriff race later.

OneMan
OneMan on Election Day. I will likely be observing the count again this year at the election commission with the new voting equipment it should hopefuly be a shorter night than normal. I will try to blog via e-mail but we will see how that goes.

OneMan
Here is a question, what makes someone put their picture on their yard signs? We have a county board candidate out near me in DuPage that has done that. The picture isn't that good, it's not scary or anything it just does not seem to work for a yard sign. Yes OneMan is trying to keep the 11th commandment as best he can.

Version 1
Title: Fund Sweep (Train)

VO: Every year Illinois puts aside a small percentage amount of the money collected from Fuel taxes to help pay for improvements at rail-road crossings. In fact we have been doing this since 1955 to help improve safety across the state. Due to this leadership Illinois no longer leads the nation in grade crossing deaths.

(Pictures of grade crossing accidents from Illinois)

VO: In Fiscal year 2002 24 people were killed in grade crossing in Illinois. So what sort of leadership does Governor Gov. Blagojevich show on the issue.

(Picture of Gov. Gov. Blagojevich doing something non-governor like)

He wants to take money out of the fund and spend it on things like tax breaks so movies get made in Illinois or to pay for The international House Music Convention.

It's not just Rail Road Crossing Improvement that he wants to take money from it's fire prevention, school technology grants, DCFS worker training all to reward his political buddies.

It time for a change, vote: XYZ.

(paid for by XYZ).

Title: Fund Sweep (Attempt to be funny)

Video of woman looking at bills at kitchen table with an adding machine.

Male Voice (off screen). Honey can I take $2,000 out of Timmy's college fund so I can get a big screen TV?

Woman at table: No Rod

Male Voice (off screen). Honey can I take $75 out of the car repair fund, it's not like the car needs fixing this week.

Woman: We have been over this Rod, I put money away so you can't spend it trying to impress your friends.

Male Voice: Come on, the guys say they will think I am cool if I have a big screen TV and buy them some chips...

Woman: Rod, look at all this debt you have racked up trying to impress your friends, enough is enough.

VO: It would be funny if it wasn't how the states finances are today. Billions in new debt, money taken out of funds that were used to pay for fire safety, medical tests on infants and a host of other special needs used to pay for pork projects like a House Music conference or the Chicago film festival.

It is time for intelligent stewardship of Illinois finances, it's time for a change.

Vote XYZ.

Off the political thing for a minute. Mrs OneMan had to leave town for a family emergency so I ended up having to fill in for her as co-troop leader at the Girl scouts Thinking Day event in Aurora. No, I didn't have to wear a uniform.

For those who know me I will give you a minute to stop laughing.

It was a interesting day, large groups of girls do behave differently than large groups of boys. I know that sounds obvious but it seems sometimes we try in this society to forget that. I also know that having a wife and daughter by no stretch of the imagination has made me that knowledgeable about girls. It's a different tribe to say the least.

It would appear that I was only one of three men at the entire event. It was a bit of a long day but fun and I am looking forward to the day I can take off and tell Mrs. OneMan "Oh you need to fill in for me at political event y but don't worry person X knows some stuff about it"

As Rich has been covering over at the fax Sen. Meeks has been making some noise about running as an independent for Governor.

Will he do it, I think it is within the realm of reality. Unlikely but then again he may just do it because he feels that strongly about school funding. At the very least the message that the Democratic party should not take some voters for greatened is a good message across the board.
