it is getting harder to see what is funny in all of this
With the latest stuff on the budget cuts it is just getting sad. Is this what one party rule gets us? Fingerpointing and failure?

I have to admit I do have a bit of an issue with it...
Via a shared link from Rick..
Matthew Yglesias reminds me again why folks like me are obviously small minded (sarcasm) ...
No, that isn't the point at all.
I guess my first question is does anyone think this wasn't a campaign event?
Contrary to what he may have said during his speech, lets all be realistic here, Sen. Obama was speaking in Berlin because is a candidate for President, he had 3 years before he was a candidate for president and was just the junior senator from Illinois to go speak in Germany.
As the poster in German seems to show it was a campaign event, lets all call it what it was. Also it is not nearly the same thing as John McCain speaking to a business group in Canada I strongly suspect that this
No Matthew, Republicans don't have an issue with politicians speaking overseas. Some of us may wonder why in the heck they need to have campaign events overseas. This isn't Presidents Kennedy or Regan both pointing out how the Berlin wall symbolizes what is wrong with Communism. It isn't Winston Churchill at Westminster College talking about the Iron Curtain.
This is a candidate campaigning overseas, it's different. I guess I am just small minded because obviously it's ok to campaign overseas.
If McCain had some huge rally someplace overseas I am sure that Democrats would have been completely cool with it.. :-)

Patrick Ruffini slams the Obama campaign for using a foreign language in its promotional material for an event in Germany. Apparently it's now unpatriotic to so much as concede that they speak foreign languages in foreign countries. Or maybe American politicians should only be allowed to speak in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and the UK.

Campaign volunteers holding clipboards shouted to passers-by, “Stop here, registering American citizens to vote!”was not going on during McCain's speech in Canada.

Obama in Berlin...
I come to Berlin as so many of my countrymen have come before. Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen -- a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world.
Yeah, running for president had nothing to do with you speaking there, right....
All in all it was a decent speech and it seems he was a big hit in Germany...
But he is running for president of the United States, not Chancellor of Germany.
This begs a question that I asked way back in 2004...
'Would you vote for candidate X who could provide prosperty and safety with a plan that would result in country Y getting jerked over or would you vote for candidate Z instead who would not provide the same level of prosperty and safety'
Or putting it in the current context, why should I care what Europe thinks of the presidential candidates? Should folks in the UK give two shakes about what Americans think of Gordon Brown?
Could the Peterson thing get any stranger?
From the Beacon News
What? This is just getting stranger by the minute, because if you want to catch a guy having a buddy or former buddy pose as a woman on-line is the answer... I think if they try bringing this stuff in front of a jury it is going to be a tough sell to say the least.
My question is was it just this guy playing Dick Tracy or if he was asked to do this by some law enforcement authority.

Len Wawczak did more than just talk with his former friend Drew Peterson using a wire. He also pretended to be a woman during online chats with Peterson.

The had a meeting about the Candaian National purchase of the EJ&E
For CN's take on the purchase follow the link.
Suffice to say it was an interesting and well attended meeting, Aurora is one of the communities that will be seeing more rail traffic as a result.
A bunch of folks spoke, one speaker almost made it sound like some sort of Canadian Conspiracy to take away American jobs...
I have to admit I am not really thrilled with the idea of getting caught more often at grade crossings and I understand why the cities that will see more rail traffic are not exactly thrilled. I also understand how their only real hope for preventing this is to get large numbers of folks involved.
They also handed out some form letters for people to send to their congressmen, nothing like a form letter to get action from an elected official.
I can understand why CN wants to buy the EJ&E as a business decision it makes complete sense and I can see how their plan would reduce Chicago rail congestion.
If I were CN (and I am not) I would try and figure out how I can use the Star line concept to my advantage in this situation (like make some guarnatees about that). To try an calm the local concern.

Started Looking at Linda Holmes D--2
Interesting that only 2 of the individual contributions that were reported seem to be from private individuals. Both with Springfield addresses...
She had $49,793.96 available...
Her Republican opponent (Terry Wintermute) is reporting $102,056.21 on hand. Also 38 of her individual contributions seem to come from private individuals.
I suspect you would not find too many senate challengers who have twice as much as the incumbent on hand.
Interesting....

Having seen the new Batman movie and knowing how a chunk of it was shot here in Illinois, my question is.
Did the Governor get the idea for calling out the National Guard after seeing a preview?

What Rod Blagojevich Can Learn from Robert Kennedy
Just finished reading The Last Campaign: Robert F. Kennedy and 82 Days That Inspired America. A very interesting book, have to admit it was perhaps a little to worshipful of RFK but still a good read. I also realized that RFK may have provided some guidance for our own governor on how to get out of his current situation.
The Governors issues as I see them and the RFK answer.
-- Lack of Trust, and due to a lack of trust a lack of apparent feeling of sincerity.
The RFK solution:
RFK spent a lot of time talking with people without the media around, he would walk into a home on a reservation or a tarpaper shack in Mississippi and ask the aids and the media to stay outside. While he went in and really talked to people, this seems to have given him a lot of credability with the media and in turn made his statements on these issues have more weight with the media.
The Rod Action plan:
Stop using people as a media sheild and as a media backdrop. It gives you zero credability.
Start visiting real locations unannouced and without media that have been impacted by the budget cuts, sit down and talk and listen. Not in sound bites, real conversations. Over time this is going to get back to the media and to the legislative leaders.
-- The fact his administartion has made some mistakes.
The RFK solution:
Talked about his role and the role of the JFK adiminstration with Vietnam. He brought it up himself.
The Rod Action Plan:
Sit down with a group of reporters and talk about Tony (without mentioning Obama), the delays in pardons and clemency, etc. Admit you were wrong (yes I know this is a stretch for this guy but have some faith).
There is some more to come on this in particular on Health Care.

Kifowit for Mayor reports over 20K in receipts in first semi-annual report.
Well she was able to raise over 20K. Don't know what the legitimate candidate threshold would be but 20K is not bad. It will be interesting to see what Tom has raised and what he has on hand as well
I suspect that his is higher.
Interesting that it looks like she got some money from Lou Lang...

More Local Action on the CN buying the EJ&E
It would appear that the cities of Aurora, Naperville and Plainfield are putting together a untied front to try and stop the sale.
I got a postcard from the city today about a meeting on the 23rd and they have set up an electronic sign on the corner of Ogden and Montgomery encouraging people to 'Get Involved' on the issue.
I have a few questions I suspect they will not be addressing are...
A) If the sale happens will the land the railroad resides on get re-assessed? I am assuming that as a landowner the railroad pays real estate taxes.
B) Is the tripling of rail traffic they are talking about in terms of trains, railcars or both and what are the new numbers for the line in Aurora then ( if you go from 3 to 9 trains it isn't as bad)...
C) The suburban commuter line that was/is going to use those same tracks, the one that we all wanted, how much rail traffic will that end up adding?
Having grown up in a town with a lot of rail (Dolton) and knowing that track has been there a really long time I am having a hard time swallowing the NIMBY arguments. The noise isn't really a problem where I live but I can understand the annoyance of getting caught behind the gates on Ogden.
The stuff on the issue from the City of Aurora is here. Interesting that they list the overpasses and underpasses of the track as being 'impacted' .

How Bobby Kennedy May Be Able to Help The Governor.
I have been reading 'The Last Campaign' about Bobby Kennedy's run for the White House in '68. About 2/3rd of the way done and I think it may offer some insight into how perhaps Governor Blagojevich can improve his image.
I still reading the book and fleshing out the idea, but I think it just might work for the governor the key would be for him not to be doing it to improve his image however...
More to come soon.

Interesting Approach
I caught some comments today on WBBM from someone leading one (or perhaps the only) anti-ConCon groups arguing that we should not do a con-con because we can't trust the folks in Springfield...
Ummm, that is kind of why people are in fact pushing for a con-con, then again that sounds better than it is not in the best interests of the members of the group I am working for.
It would be interesting to hear what our junior senator thinks about the whole thing.

More Proof That He Doesn't Get it...
From the State Journal Register
Later he argues about 'access'.
You know governor there is a solution for this, it is called field offices. They provide face to face services to those folks who need it close. You don't need nor does it make sense to move professionals all over the state, it just leads to extra costs and turnover.
I think we should all chip in so he can go for his MBA in night school or something so he can learn some management skills.

“We need to move some of our operations to other parts of Illinois,” Blagojevich said in Harrisburg. This isn’t only about giving you guys a chance to be able to get some jobs,” he said. “It’s about also making sure that the operations of state government are positioned and apportioned fairly across our big, large and diverse state. And we need more of these operations in places like Saline County and in places like southern Illinois.

Change Aurora's Tobacco Sales Ordinance
The Beacon had a column yesterday about changing/getting rid of Aurora's tobacco sales ordinance since it might be getting in the way of economic development.
It's a 100 foot restriction and I can see getting rid of the requirement when it comes to day care centers and perhaps some sort of change for downtown Aurora. Other than that, leave it alone. It's a 100 feet, less than 4 first downs. Is that really so bad? If you can illustrate real economic development issues because of it, let me know. Otherwise it is really so bad that you can't open a smoke shop across the street of East High?
